Boston is a major centre for hospitals, universities and life sciences, and IT firms here often support clients in all three. Those clients can ask a question a young startup client rarely does: when this server, account or permission was changed, who approved it, and where is that written down?

If the answer lives in an engineer's sent mail, it's slow to produce and easy to get wrong. If it lives in a separate document that someone updates after the fact, it drifts from what actually happened.

In ShipSprint, a change can start as a line in a client's runbook in the built-in wiki and become a task from that sentence. The task carries the discussion and the time logged against it, and the wiki page keeps its own history, so the procedure as it stood on the day of the change can be found again.

Billing hours and protecting the bench

On Team and up, engineers log time in about five seconds next to the task they just finished, and timesheets show the hours by client project. Reminders to log go to the engineer, not to a manager. The manager dashboard shows who is overloaded before a client notices.

On Business, the owner command center puts every client on one screen, scorecards show delivered work per person (adjusted for approved leave and visible to the person they describe), and the workspace audit log records actions in the workspace, which is useful when a client's own auditor asks how your tools are controlled. There are no screenshots, keystroke logs or activity tracking.

Capacity planning counts leave and holidays: Thanksgiving week in late November, Independence Day on 4 July, the end-of-December holidays, and Patriots' Day, a Massachusetts state holiday on the third Monday in April, if your engineers take it while some clients stay open.

Before a Boston IT firm commits

Billing. Per-seat prices are in Indian rupees, charged through Razorpay, and converted to dollars by your bank. Your accountant can say whether Massachusetts sales or use tax applies to a foreign software service.

Data protection. In the US, privacy duties come from state laws such as California's CCPA and Massachusetts's own data security regulations, and from sector rules like HIPAA, rather than one federal law. Clients in health care may require you to name the vendors that see their data. Check the sub-processor list and the security overview against your obligations and each client contract before tickets with personal data go in.
