Every department, one development team

An in-house software team at an engineering or energy company rarely has one product owner. Releases that wait for a window

Software that touches operations often can’t deploy whenever it’s ready. It waits for a maintenance window, a change approval or a quiet week at a site. That means the board has to show clearly what’s merged and waiting versus what’s still being built.

On Team and up, the board follows GitHub. Creating a branch moves the card and merging the pull request closes it, so “done” means merged and nobody has to drag cards to keep up. Add a column for work that is merged but awaiting its release window, cap it with a WIP limit, and the queue of unreleased changes is visible to the change approver as well as the team.

On Business, delivery forecasts follow the team’s measured velocity as sprints close. When a department asks when its change will be live, the answer comes from how the team is actually performing, and the workspace audit log records who did what if anyone needs to check later.

Planning sprints on the Canadian calendar

Capacity planning on Team and up counts approved leave and public holidays, so a sprint that runs across the Christmas to New Year period, Canada Day on 1 July or Thanksgiving in October is sized for the developers who will be there. Those are also weeks when change windows tend to be scarce, which is worth planning around before a department is promised a date.

Time zones. IST is 12 hours 30 minutes ahead of Calgary in winter and 11 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer. If the GitHub connection needs troubleshooting, send the error and settings in one message before you finish for the day; replies usually come the same working day, Indian time.

Billing. Seats are priced per user in Indian rupees and charged through Razorpay, with your bank converting to Canadian dollars. Your finance team or accountant can confirm how GST applies to a foreign supplier, and procurement may want to see the pricing page.
