The experiment card that never closes
Teams that do data, machine learning or prototyping work know the pattern. Someone picks up “try a different approach to the ranking model”, it stays in progress for five weeks, and at every stand-up the answer is “still looking into it”. Meanwhile, the production engineers beside them have a sprint to finish, and the board mixes the two in a way that makes neither readable.
The problem isn’t the exploratory work. It’s that the tool treats it as a feature with an estimate, when what it really has is a question and a time box.
ShipSprint lets you run experiments on their own board, next to the product board, with their own columns and WIP limits. A sensible shape is a limited number of open experiments, each with a time box and a finish line that is a written result rather than shipped code. When the time is up, the card closes with what was learned, whether the answer was yes, no or not yet.
How the two boards work together
A WIP limit on the experiment board means a new question waits until an old one has an answer.
Each experiment ends with a short write-up, with page history, so the team doesn’t rerun last spring’s dead end.
When a result says “ship it”, turn that sentence in the write-up into a task on the product board.
On Team and up, branches move cards and merged pull requests close them, so product status needs no manual upkeep.
Ideas and bug reports from elsewhere wait in a triage inbox until someone decides which board they belong on.
Velocity you can trust, and tools in the editor
Keeping exploratory work off the product board has a second benefit: velocity becomes meaningful again. On Business, delivery forecasts are worked out from the product team’s measured velocity as sprints close, and they aren’t distorted by research cards that were never estimable in the first place.
On Team and Business, Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and Antigravity connect over MCP. A developer can pull up a task or log progress from the editor, and the assistant acts with that developer’s permissions only. On Business, its actions are recorded in the audit log.
Each person’s “my day” screen lists their items with a one-tap time log and an “I’m blocked” button that brings in the right person. ShipSprint doesn’t take screenshots, log keystrokes or track activity, and on Business, scorecards are leave-adjusted and visible to the developer they describe.
Holidays and the sprint plan
On Team and up, capacity planning counts approved leave and public holidays. The Christmas to New Year period usually means a short sprint or none, and Canada Day on 1 July and Thanksgiving in October each take a day out of a fortnight. If team members also go to conferences or teach, record those weeks as out-of-office so the plan reflects them.
Using ShipSprint from Edmonton: the practical side
Who you’re buying from. ShipSprint is developed by Quantuva Technologies Pvt. Ltd. in Hyderabad, India, which has no office or local entity in Canada. Support is by email and in-app chat.
Time zones. IST is 12 hours 30 minutes ahead of Edmonton in winter and 11 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer. If something goes wrong connecting a repository, include the error and your settings in the first message; replies usually come the same working day, Indian time, which is your night.
Billing. You pay per seat in Indian rupees through Razorpay, and your bank converts the charge to Canadian dollars. Ask your accountant how GST applies to a service from outside Canada.
Data protection. Experiment datasets and bug reports can contain personal information, which PIPEDA and Alberta’s own private-sector privacy law cover. Keep raw data out of tickets where you can, and check the sub-processor list and the security overview against your obligations and any data-sharing agreement first.
