Research becoming a company

A startup that grows out of research work starts with an unusual mix. If part of your funding comes from grants or research programmes, the money usually arrives with reporting obligations: milestones reached, hours spent on eligible work, sometimes a breakdown by person. Rebuilding that from memory at the end of a quarter is slow, and it’s the kind of thing an early team gets wrong.

On Team and up, time logging takes about five seconds next to the task just finished, and weekly timesheets collect each person’s hours. If the grant-funded work lives in its own project, its hours are already separated when the report is due. Reminders for missed entries go to the person, not the founder. Growing up, and the Canadian calendar

When investors or a first large customer start asking for dates, Business adds delivery forecasts based on measured velocity as each sprint closes, the owner command center with a Monday digest, and leave-adjusted scorecards each person can see. It costs ₹599 per user per month.

In a team of four, one absence changes everything. Capacity planning on Team and up counts approved leave and public holidays, which matters most at the Christmas to New Year break, on Canada Day (1 July) and at Thanksgiving in October, especially if a grant milestone falls just after one of them.

What an Edmonton founder should know before signing up

Who you’re buying from. ShipSprint is a product of Quantuva Technologies Pvt. Ltd. of Hyderabad, India. There is no office or local entity in Canada; support is by email and in-app chat, with community support on Free.

Time zones. IST is 12 hours 30 minutes ahead of Edmonton in winter and 11 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer, so India’s working day happens during your night. On paid plans, support replies usually come the same working day, Indian time.

Billing. Paid seats are charged in Indian rupees through Razorpay, and your bank converts them to Canadian dollars. If you’re paying from grant funds, check with your accountant how GST applies to a foreign supplier and whether the receipt meets the funder’s requirements.

Data protection. PIPEDA and Alberta’s own private-sector privacy law may both apply to personal data you collect, and research data can carry ethics or funder conditions on top. Read the sub-processor list and the security overview against all of those before such data goes into the workspace.
