Two kinds of work that don’t fit one template

Some teams do work with a known end: a system to commission, a release to ship, a contract deliverable due on a date. Others do work where the next step depends on what the last one found, such as testing a model, trying a prototype or analysing a dataset. Many organisations have both, sometimes in the same team, and most project tools are built for only the first.

Forcing exploratory work into fixed-scope sprints produces boards full of cards that never close and estimates nobody believes. Running date-driven work as loosely as research produces missed deadlines. The fix is to let each kind of work run on its own terms and still see both in one place.

Findings that outlast the person who found them

The built-in wiki keeps findings, method notes and decisions next to the tasks they came from, with page history. Any sentence on a page can become a task, so “we should rerun this with the new data” turns into work that someone owns. When a student, contractor or new hire joins, the reasoning is already written down.

For date-driven work, delivery forecasts on Business are calculated from measured velocity as each sprint closes, so a commissioning or contract date that is slipping becomes visible early.

Capacity, holidays and no monitoring

On Team and up, capacity planning counts approved leave, out-of-office and public holidays. In Canada the weeks that take the most out of a plan are the Christmas to New Year break, Canada Day on 1 July and Thanksgiving in October. A lab or engineering group that also loses people to conferences or field work can record those as out-of-office so the plan reflects them.

There are no screenshots, keystroke logs or activity tracking. Time logging on Team and up takes about five seconds beside a task, and reminders go to the person rather than their manager. On Business, scorecards use delivered work and self-logged hours, adjusted for approved leave, and each person can see their own.

Using ShipSprint from Edmonton: what to check first

Who you’re buying from. Quantuva Technologies Pvt. Ltd., a company in Hyderabad, India, builds ShipSprint. There is no office or local entity in Canada, and support is handled by email and in-app chat.

Time zones. IST is 12 hours 30 minutes ahead of Edmonton in winter and 11 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer. The Indian working day is your night, so support replies usually come the same working day, Indian time, and you’ll often find them waiting in the morning.

Billing. Plans are charged per seat in Indian rupees through Razorpay, and your bank converts the amount to Canadian dollars. If you’re buying through a grant or institutional account, check how GST applies to a foreign supplier with your accountant or finance office.

Data protection. PIPEDA governs private-sector personal information in Canada, and Alberta is among the provinces with their own privacy laws; public bodies have separate rules. Check the sub-processor list and the security overview against what applies to you, and against any research ethics or funder conditions, before personal data goes in.
