Planning work when you don't know the answer yet

Some engineering is predictable: a form, an endpoint, a migration you've done before. Some isn't: a new model, an algorithm that may not be fast enough, an integration with hardware nobody has documented. Sprint tools treat both the same, so the uncertain work either gets a made-up estimate or never appears on the board at all.

The result is a sprint that looks late when the team has actually learned something important, and a lot of knowledge that lives only in a branch someone abandoned.

ShipSprint lets a team put exploratory work on the board as a time-boxed spike with its own column, kept apart from delivery work by WIP limits. When the spike ends, the outcome goes into the built-in wiki, with page history, and any sentence in the write-up can become the next task.

How the board handles uncertain work

Spikes with a limit

A column for exploration with its own WIP limit, so research doesn't quietly swallow the sprint.

Results in the wiki

What was tried and what happened, with page history. Any sentence can become the follow-up task.

Delivery that follows GitHub

On Team and up, branches move cards and merged pull requests close them.

Forecasts on delivered work

On Business, dates recalculated from measured velocity as each sprint closes.

An inbox for requests

Questions from the rest of the company go to triage, not to the engineer mid-experiment.

A record of engineering time, if you need one

Some companies need to know how engineering time was split between kinds of work. If your company claims UK R&D tax relief, for example, your accountant may ask for a record of who worked on what; check with them what evidence they need. On Team and up, developers log time in about five seconds next to the task they just finished, and spikes and delivery tasks sit on separate columns or projects, so the split is already there.

Reminders for missing time go to the developer, not their lead. Nothing is captured automatically: no screenshots, no keystroke logging, no activity tracking. Hours are what people enter.

On Team and Business, developers can also connect Claude Code, Cursor, Antigravity, Claude or ChatGPT over MCP, to check what's assigned or log progress from the editor. The assistant uses the developer's own permissions, and on Business its actions appear in the workspace audit log.

Capacity planning on Team and up counts approved leave. A small team that loses two people over the UK bank holiday weekends, Easter or Christmas to New Year should plan those sprints for the people left.

Using ShipSprint from Cambridge: notes for the engineering lead

Who you're buying from. ShipSprint is a Quantuva Technologies Pvt. Ltd. product, built in Hyderabad, India. There's no office or local entity in the UK; support works by email and in-app chat.

Time zones. IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of Cambridge in winter and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer. Expect replies the same working day, Indian time, and put repository names and error messages in the first message about a GitHub connection.

Billing. We bill per seat in Indian rupees via Razorpay; your bank converts it into pounds. Your accountant can say how VAT applies to a service bought from abroad.

Data protection. The UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 cover any personal data in issues or wiki pages. If your work is under a research collaboration or a client agreement with confidentiality terms, check the sub-processor list and the security overview against those as well as your own obligations.
