Research work and delivery work need different tools

Some work has a clear definition of done: build the feature, fix the bug, ship the release. Other work starts with a question and might end with "that didn't work, here's why". Teams that do both struggle with tools that only understand the first kind, because an experiment that fails on schedule looks like a missed task on a sprint board.

Cambridge is a university city, and a company that grew out of research may keep research habits as it starts building products. The risk for a team like that isn't usually speed. It's losing the reasoning: why an approach was dropped, what the data showed, who made the call. When the person who ran the experiment moves on, that knowledge goes with them.

ShipSprint pairs boards and sprints with a built-in wiki that has page history. Experiment notes and decisions sit next to the tasks they produced, and any sentence on a page can become a task, so a finding turns into work without being retyped.

Boards for both kinds of work

Exploratory work can run on its own board with columns that fit it, such as hypothesis, running, written up, while product engineering runs in sprints on another. Per-column WIP limits keep either from taking on more than the people available can handle, and a triage inbox collects new requests so they are prioritised rather than picked up by whoever sees them first.

On Team and up, the engineering board follows GitHub: branches move cards and merged pull requests close them. On Business, delivery forecasts come from measured velocity as sprints close, which suits the delivery side of the company. For the research side, the honest output is usually the write-up, and the wiki keeps it.

Operations

Recurring tasks, supplier requests and compliance checklists on their own board.

Founders and directors

On Business, the owner command center across every team and a Monday digest, assembled for you.

Small teams, split days

When people split their week between a lab bench, an office and home, status by conversation stops working. A card's column on ShipSprint is its status, so nobody has to be in the same room to know where things are. Each person's "my day" screen shows today's items, a one-tap time log and an "I'm blocked" button that brings in the colleague who can help, with the context attached.

On Team and up, capacity planning counts approved leave and out-of-office. Plan around the UK bank holiday weekends, Easter and Christmas to New Year, when a small team can lose a large share of its people at once.

There are no screenshots, keystroke logs or activity tracking. Time logs are what people enter themselves, and on Business, scorecards are leave-adjusted and visible to the person they describe.

Using ShipSprint from Cambridge: what to check first

Who you're buying from. ShipSprint is made by Quantuva Technologies Pvt. Ltd. in Hyderabad, India. There is no office or local entity in the UK, and support is by email and in-app chat.

Time zones. IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of Cambridge in winter and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer. A message sent in your morning reaches us in the Indian afternoon, and replies usually come the same working day, Indian time.

Billing. Plans are charged per seat in Indian rupees through Razorpay, and your bank converts the charge. How VAT applies to a service bought from outside the UK is a question for your accountant.

Data protection. Personal data in the workspace falls under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. If you work with partners under collaboration or funding agreements, those may add conditions. Check the sub-processor list and the security overview against your obligations and those contracts.

FAQ

Questions from Cambridge teams

Both. Boards and columns are set per project, so an experiment pipeline and a sprint can sit side by side. The wiki keeps the write-ups and decisions with page history.
