Every department is your customer

A development team inside a bank, a broker, a media house or a retailer doesn't have one product owner. It has many. Finance wants a report changed before the audit, operations wants a manual step automated, sales wants a new field, compliance wants a change by a regulatory date. Each request arrives by email, in a meeting or as a message to whichever engineer the requester knows best.

Work that arrives that way gets done in the order people shout. Engineers are interrupted all day, the planned sprint stalls, and the head of technology spends meetings explaining why nothing seems to finish.

Per-column WIP limits are the simplest defence an internal team has. When "in progress" already holds as many items as the team can handle, the board shows it to everyone, including the department head asking for one more thing. The trade-off becomes visible: start this, and something else waits.

Engineers work from a "my day" screen with today's items, a one-tap time log and an "I'm blocked" button. When they're waiting on a sign-off from another department or access to a production system, pressing it brings in the person who can help, with the card's context attached, and the delay is recorded on the board rather than lost in a chat.

Dates the business can plan around

Departments ask "when?" more than anything else. On Business, delivery forecasts are worked out from the team's measured velocity as each sprint closes, so the answer is based on how fast the team actually delivers. If a regulatory date is at risk, the forecast shows it early enough to cut scope or add people.

Capacity planning on Team and up counts approved leave, out-of-office and public holidays.
