Building a product while the client work pays the rent

Plenty of startups don't begin with a funding round. They begin as two or three engineers doing contract work, with a product idea they work on in the gaps. That's a sensible way to start, and a hard one to manage: the client always has a deadline, and the product always has "next week".

The first thing that helps is putting both on the board. Make the client engagement one project and the product another, and the question "what are we actually spending our time on?" stops being a feeling. When it's worth paying

A five-person team can run on Free for as long as two projects and the core boards are enough. Three things tend to make the move worthwhile.

The first is GitHub. Once more than one person is shipping code, keeping cards in step with branches by hand gets old, and on Team branches move cards and merged pull requests close them. The second is hiring a sixth person, since Free stops at five. The third is investors or a first large customer asking when something will be ready. Delivery forecasts from measured velocity come with Business, along with the owner command center and a Monday digest, and that's usually the point where a founder stops rebuilding the status picture by hand.

The 14-day trial is the full Business plan with a sample project loaded. If you don't upgrade at the end, the workspace carries on under Free and nothing is deleted.

Small teams feel every absence

With five people, one person on holiday is a fifth of the company. Capacity planning on Team and up counts approved leave and public holidays, so a sprint is planned for the people who'll actually be there. In the Czech Republic, watch Christmas to New Year, Easter, and the July and August summer holidays; a demo day or launch in early September means most of the preparation happens while people are on summer leave.

Each person opens a "my day" screen with today's items and an "I'm blocked" button that pulls in whoever can unblock them. There's no screen capture, keystroke logging or activity tracking on any plan.

Before a Prague startup signs up

Who you're buying from. Quantuva Technologies Pvt. Ltd., based in Hyderabad, India, builds and sells ShipSprint. There is no office or local entity in the Czech Republic, and help comes by email and in-app chat.

Time zones. IST is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead of Prague in winter and 3 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer, which leaves a good overlap with your morning. Replies usually come the same working day, Indian time.

Billing. Paid seats are charged in Indian rupees through Razorpay, and your bank or card provider does the conversion. Ask your accountant how VAT applies to a service bought from outside the EU.

Data protection. Even a five-person startup is subject to GDPR once it holds customer or candidate data. Read the sub-processor list and the security overview, and check them against your obligations and any customer agreements.
